What is Emergency Lighting?

Lighting that automatically comes on when the power supply to the normal lighting provision fails.

Emergency lighting is lighting for an emergency situation when the main power supply is cut and normal electrical illumination fails. The loss of mains electricity could be the result of a fire or a power cut. Without emergency lighting this could lead to sudden darkness and possible danger to occupants, either through physical danger or panic. Emergency lighting is normally required to operate fully automatically and give illumination of a sufficiently high level to enable all occupants to evacuate the premises safely.

The British Standard provides clear guidelines to work to. BS 5266-1 this relates not only to hotels, clubs, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and colleges, licensed premises, offices, museums, shops but also multi-storey dwellings.

Monthly Emergency Lighting Tests

All emergency lighting systems must be tested monthly. The test is a short functional test in accordance with BS EN 50172 / BS 5266-8.

The period of simulated failure should be sufficient for the purpose of this test while minimising damage to the system components, e.g. lamps. During this period, all luminaires and signs shall be checked to ensure that they are present, clean and functioning correctly.

Annual Emergency Light Tests

A test for the full rated duration of the emergency lights must be carried out. The emergency lights must still be working at the end of this three hour test.

The result of the monthly and annual tests must be recorded and, if failures are detected, these must be remedied as soon as possible.

Should the worst happen and a fire breaks out, emergency lights are a critical part of ensuring everyone on-site is able to safely evacuate your business in the event of a power failure.

As such, every single business is legally required to ensure their emergency lights are tested at least once a month by a sufficiently trained member of staff and once a year by a competent person – and that’s where our experienced engineers come in.

Emergency Lighting Tests - Popular Questions

  • The Importance of Testing

Health & safety legislation requires all commercial and public premises to have an emergency lighting installation that complies with BS 5266:2005.

Emergency lighting systems automatically operate for between 1 and 3 hours on a battery backup system. These need to be regularly checked and tested to ensure they work correctly.

In most cases, your mains lighting will need to be turned off. This is to simulate a power failure.

Testing includes the key switches, batteries, luminaries, and control equipment.

All emergency lighting should be tested for its full rated duration as stipulated by the British Standard, BS 5266:2005.

  • Annual Testing

The annual test should be a full rated duration test to ensure that the emergency lights are still working and producing the acceptable level of light at the end of the test.  So for example if a luminaire is rated for a 3 hour duration, then after 3 hours in an emergency situation the light should still be lit.

It is worth noting that this full duration test should be completed at a time of low risk of an emergency situation so that the batteries have sufficient time to recharge.

  • MonthlyTesting

All emergency lighting systems should be tested monthly.  This is a short functional test in accordance with BS EN 50172:2004 / BS 5266-8:2004.

The duration of the test should be sufficient to ensure that the luminaire operates correctly, whilst minimising any damage to the system components, e.g. Lamps, Battery.

It is important to note that the entire system doesn't have to be tested at the same time.  The system can be tested in sections, over a testing schedule, so long as each luminaire is tested each calendar month.

  • Daily Testing

This interval specifically applies to central battery source of lighting systems.  In this case a visual inspection of the indicators on the central power supply to identify that the system is operational.  No test of the system operation is required.
