Why is Electrical Remedial Work required?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) assesses the safety of an installation. Where certain defects or damage is observed, remedial works are required to satisfy the duties imposed on duty holders by the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, designed to ensure systems are safe for continued use.
What are the Regulations?
BS 7671:2008(2011) Requirements for electrical installations (IET Wiring Regulations - 17th Edition) Our Fixed Wire Testing service will identify any defects in line with the categories, outlined below, contained within the latest edition of BS 7671.
What defects are identified in an EICR?
Following Fixed Wire Testing, any damage, deterioration, defects, dangerous conditions or areas of non-compliance will be reported within an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). Any areas of non-compliance are given a code and each defect code has a particular meaning: Code 1 - Danger present - risk of injury and immediate remedial action required Code 2 - Potentially dangerous - urgent remedial action required Code 3 - Improvement recommended The recording of either a C1 or C2 observation would result in an unsatisfactory report outcome.
When does Electrical Remedial Work need to be carried out?
Following an EICR, the regulations state that if a defect is recorded, “it's an issue that should be dealt with.” This repair work should therefore be undertaken within an appropriate period of time.
Who should carry out Electrical Remedial Work?
A competent person or approved contractor is required to undertake any electrical repairs or maintenance services. Competence to perform electrical work can be demonstrated through industry accredited qualifications and sufficient practical experience relative to the work required.
What kind of documentation can I expect upon completion?
Reporting can vary greatly depending on provider. With Elecheck and as required under BS 7671:2008(2011), you will receive a Minor Works Certificate when an addition to an electrical installation does not extend to the installation of a new circuit. When altering or adding to an existing installation, you will receive a NICEIC Electrical Installation Certificate.
What are the benefits of Electrical Remedial Work?
An EICR report is only the first stage of electrical compliance, designed to identify faults so they can be repaired. Maintaining your system in a satisfactory condition will help reduce the likelihood of electrical faults in the future and prolong the useful life of your system.
