"The object of Portable Appliance Testing is to maintain electrical safety and to prevent any risk of fire or shock.."

PAT Testing

PAT Testing is known as Portable Appliance Testing, is the systematic checking of any equipment that can be connected to a common supply by means of an electric plug and socket arrangement. It is an essential part of any electrical compliance programme to ensure that all appliances are safe to use.

The scope of this test is much wider than the name suggests. It doesn’t just include truly portable items but encompasses everything that is attached to the electrical wiring system including IT equipment, and fixed appliances up to 400 Volts. A freezer cabinet, for example, is classed as a ‘portable appliance’ as is a photocopier or drinks cabinet.

As with Fixed Wire Testing, Portable appliance testing is encompassed in the IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) British Standard BS7671. The groupings for Electrical PAT Testing as defined by the IET include ‘moveable’, ‘stationary’, ‘portable’, handheld’ and ‘IT’. By definition this offers a very broad spectrum of equipment that falls within these groups so Pat usually concerns large numbers of individual tests.

As a student, tenant, contractor or member of staff, you need to be aware of what to do in relation to PAT and the electrical equipment you are responsible for.

PAT covers everyday items such as kettles, computer hardware and extension leads, as well as equipment used in laboratories, theatres and catering and hospitality establishments.

Popular Questions

  • What is a Portable Appliance Test?

A Portable Appliance Test is a process of checking electrical appliances for safety through a series of visual inspections and electronic tests.

  • Why do I need to have my appliances tested?

The best way of ensuring that your appliances are safe is to have a  test carried out on them.  This is a good way for businesses to ensure that they are meeting their legal obligations to maintain high standards of electrical safety in their buildings.

  • What does it involve?

To establish the safety and suitability of your electrical appliances we will carry out a visual inspection of the appliance.  For Class [1] equipment we will also inject test signals into the cable and appliance to ensure their integrity.

  • What will I receive?

Upon completion testing you will receive a report that details the following as a minimum:

    1)  A report containing each appliance type, name, location and description

    2)  A full set of test results for each appliance tested

    3)  A full list of any failed items with an explanation of their failure

    4)  A visible pass or fail label on each appliance detailing the inspection date, next test due and the inspector’s signature.
